Functional Skills English qualifications are available at five different levels: Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

The Entry Level qualifications are designed for learners who have little or no previous experience of English and are designed to help them develop basic skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are designed for learners who have some previous experience of English and are designed to help them develop more advanced skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Functional Skills English qualifications cover three key areas: speaking and listening, reading and writing.

The speaking and listening component assesses the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts.

The reading component assesses the ability to read and understand a range of texts.

The writing component assesses the ability to write clearly, effectively and coherently

Up to six months

To enrol in English Functional Skills, you must be a resident in the UK and have the right to work and live in the UK.

  • You must be 19 years or older
    (If you turned 19 after the 31st of August 2024, you will not be eligible and will need to wait until the 1st of September 2025 to enrol).
  • You can be unemployed, self-employed, or in employment to enrol in this course.
  • You must do an assessment to determine which level you will need.
