Functional Skills maths qualifications are available at five different levels: Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

The Entry Level qualifications are designed for learners who have little or no previous experience of maths and are designed to help them develop basic skills in using numbers, carrying out calculations and interpreting results.

The Level 1 qualification in maths shows employers that you have the basics covered for many jobs. A Level 2 qualification in maths shows a good standard of maths and is required for many jobs.

Maths short courses

Functional Skills Maths qualifications cover four key areas: number, measure, geometry and statistics.

The number component assesses the ability to use numbers and the number system.

The measure component assesses the ability to use units of measurement.

The geometry component assesses the ability to use geometric principles and calculate perimeters, areas and volumes.

The statistics component assesses the ability to use statistical methods and interpret data.

Up to six months

To enrol in Functional Skills maths, you must be a resident in the UK and have the right to work and live in the UK.

  • You must be 19 years or older
    (If you turned 19 after the 31st of August 2024, you will not be eligible and will need to wait until the 1st of September 2025 to enrol).
  • You can be unemployed, self-employed, or in employment to enrol in this course.
  • You must do an assessment to determine which level you will need.
